Armada | 1 | The Last Crusade | 49:14 | Armada - The Last Crusade | BBC | TV doco | 1988 | BBC & TVE Spain | Alan Ereira | Alan Ereira | Francis Drake was a pirate: Good Queen Bess took a cut of his profits. This week's three-part series stands back from the 400-year-old story of 'victory' and 'defeat' to look at what really happened in 1588. A number of new discoveries in archives and in the wrecks, together with new analysis by experts in many countries, means that the Armada must now be seen in a different way. In this first film the background to the story is spelled out.
Armada | 2 | The Floating Fortress | 49:02 | Armada - The Floating Fortress | BBC | TV doco | 1988 | BBC & TVE Spain | Alan Ereira | Alan Ereira | The old view was that the Armada was defeated by English seadogs in smaller, less well-armed ships. The new version is that it was prevented from succeeding by bad planning, and destroyed by bad luck. But a computer analysis reveals a quite different picture. The Armada took a week to sail from Land's End to Calais. On the way there were a number of skirmishes, but the English did not sink a single Spanish ship - and on the last two days, not a shot was fired. Yet by the time it reached Calais, the Armada had been cheated of its goal.
Armada | 3 | The Scattering | 49:45 | Armada - The Scattering | BBC | TV doco | 1988 | BBC & TVE Spain | Alan Ereira | Alan Ereira | The Armada proved unable to stand up to English gunfire. Underwater archeology offers new clues and raises new questions about the battles. The homeward voyage was long and terrible. But there was great suffering in the English fleet, too - for very different reasons. And when the Armada got home, how did Philip IIreact? The discovery of a private letter from Philip to his chaplain casts new light on the end of the story of the Armada.

Draining the ocean near Newfoundland reveals a preserved Basque galleon trading in lucrative whale oil. The Spanish empire relies on powerful ships like this to bring back valuable cargo, like silver and tobacco, from the New World. But when emerging rival England wants a share of this wealth, the Spanish attack. Draining an Armada wreck off the coast of Ireland reveals an extraordinary battle for control. | 05/08/2019

Deep Wreck Mysteries | 2.1 | Stealth Sub | 44:31 | Stealth Sub | Yesterday | TV doco | 2008 | Mallinson Sadler Productions; Northern Sky; Deep Sea Productions | John Ruthwin & Crispin Sadler | Russel Boulter | U480 | In August 1944, during the 2nd World War, four Allied ships are mysteriously destroyed without warning off the coast of Southern England. Sixty years later, in the English Channel, 20 kilometres south west of the Isle of Wight, 55 metres down, the sea reveals a 2nd World War German submarine unlike any found before. Using revolutionary investigative techniques, a team of underwater detectives discover a story of invention and heroism, and a secret stealth technology. Identified as U-480, it was the first U-boat to go into successful action with a special coating that made it invisible to sonar. But not even this could save the submarine from a fatal trap set by the Allies. The most effective submarine detection device the wartime Allied Navy develops is ASDIC. It sends out pulses of sound and listens for echoes from the thick steel hull of U-boats. As the war progressed, this and other techniques meant that U-boats from being the hunters became the hunted and the Germans began to lose the submarine war. To regain the upper hand, in August 1944, the Germans dispatch a very special submarine U-480 to lie in wait under the main shipping lanes that cross the English Channel. 4 ships, totalling 14,000 tonnes and including the Canadian warship, HMCS Alberni and the British minesweeper HMS Loyalty were sunk without warning. But how in one of the most heavily patrolled sectors of the English Channel was the submarine able to make its fatal attacks completely undetected? Dives down to the submarine 60 years later reveal it is covered in a strange rubber coating. Is this responsible for the submarine remaining undetected? Remarkably a crewmember of the U-480 survived the war and talks about life in the submarine and what he thought was the secret of its success. Deep Wreck Mysteries | 2.2 | Search for the Bone Wreck | 44:52 | Search for the Bone Wreck | Yesterday | TV doco | 2008 | Mallinson Sadler Productions; Northern Sky; Deep Sea Productions | Russel Boulter | In June 1915, the SS Armenian, a large steamship managed by the White Star Line, the owners of the Titanic, heads into the Bristol Channel from the United States. She is carrying over 1400 mules destined for the Western Front. As the unarmed vessel nears the British coast, a German submarine spots the former liner and fires warning shots. To avoid capture, the Armenian makes a run for it. As the U-boat continually pounds her with shells, the captain orders the crew to abandon ship. Once the remaining crew is safely off in lifeboats, the German U-boat fires a torpedo into the stern of the steamship. It only takes minutes for the Armenian to sink to the bottom of the Atlantic with her unfortunate cargo of 1400 mules still on board. Twenty-nine American crewmembers, mainly muleteers, also die causing a major international incident since the United States has not yet officially entered the war. More than 90 years later, the infamous White Star Line vessel has still not been found. Many have searched the waters off the coast of Cornwall, but the Armenian has proved to be elusive. Now, a new expedition of international divers is hunting for the ship known as the Bone Wreck. Using state of the art dive and survey equipment, the team aims to be the first to find this long-lost vessel. Underwater surveys have revealed several possibilities, and the divers' first objective is to go down to two large wrecks near the point the captain of the Armenian noted as the location where he believed the ship went down. But even though one of those wrecks is full of bones, neither proves to be the Armenian. The expedition is forced to follow other lines of enquiry in order to locate the missing ship. Unexpectedly, German archives reveal the actual log from the German U-boat that sank the mule transport. The German commander's coordinates are at least 30 kilometres from where the ship was reported to have sunk and where the team has been searching. How could they have got it so wrong. | 02/04/2009
Deep Wreck Mysteries | 2.3 | Collision Course | 44:43 | Collision Course | Yesterday | TV doco | 2008 | Mallinson Sadler Productions; Northern Sky; Deep Sea Productions | Crispin Sadler & Sarah Pitt | Russel Boulter | Eighty kilometres off the northern coast of Ireland the Queen Mary, the most famous liner in the world, carrying 10,000 American and Canadian troops to Britain, rams and sinks her escort ship, HMS Curacoa. The British cruiser Curacoa is sliced in two and takes just six minutes to sink. 338 of her crew die as the giant liner does not stop to pick up survivors. The story becomes one of the 2nd World War 's best- kept secrets. Who is to blame for the sinking? For the first time an extreme dive expedition searches for evidence from the wreck itself which lies in deep Atlantic waters, 125 metres below. Royal Navy crewmen of the Curacoa who survived tell their tale. Personnel aboard the Queen Mary also share their memories. US Army Air Corps veterans witnessed the horror of the sinking. Their moving stories, together with dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to the tragedy, paint an accurate picture of an important and largely untold wartime story. The 4,500-ton HMS Curacoa was a light cruiser that had seen service in the First World War. She was past her prime, but had been converted for an air defence role. As the Queen Mary entered British coastal waters Curacoa's job was to protect her from German aircraft. The 81,000-ton Queen Mary had travelled across the Atlantic from New York. Camouflaged to escape detection, she sailed fast and zigzagged. No German U- boat could keep up with her; her twists and turns made it hard for a submarine to aim torpedoes. Her ability to evade the enemy led her to become known as the 'grey ghost'. In order to provide effective anti-aircraft cover the Curacoa needed to stay close to the Queen Mary. On October 2nd 1942 she was too close. Did Curacoa steer a fatal course towards the Queen Mary or was the Queen Mary to blame? What will the dive to the wreck reveal? | 06/02/2009
Deep Wreck Mysteries | 2.4 | The Leopoldville Disaster | 41:09 | The Leopoldville Disaster | Yesterday | TV doco | 2008 | Mallinson Sadler Productions; Northern Sky; Deep Sea Productions | Wayne Abbott | Russel Boulter | As the troopship SS Leopoldville steams towards France from England on Christmas Eve, 1944 with Allied soldiers on board, a torpedo rips into her side. After a fatal delay, the ship sinks within sight of the port of Cherbourg, leaving men to jump into the bitter winter seas. Nearly 800 soldiers do not live to see Christmas Day. Now, an international team of divers brave some of the English Channel's most treacherous and dangerous waters in an attempt to reach the wreck. They aim to uncover clues to help answer the question: why did so many young men have to die? The Leopoldville is a Belgian liner taking 2,235 American reinforcements to repel a massive German attack - the Battle of the Bulge. But just off the coast of France, a German torpedo strikes the crowded troop carrier amidships, killing nearly 400 young soldiers instantly. The others make their way to the upper decks of the Leopoldville. They stand patiently waiting to be rescued. In a daring rescue attempt, her escort, HMS Brilliant, manoeuvres alongside the larger liner. In rough seas, soldiers on the Leopoldville line up to jump down onto the smaller vessel. But the destroyer can only take a few hundred and has to head for the shore. There is a no further rescue attempt. Some 1,200 soldiers are still left on board. Two and a half hours after the torpedo hit, the Leopoldville slips beneath the waves. Today divers braving some of the English Channel's most treacherous and dangerous waters, 56 metres down, see evidence of the chaotic last moments of the ship, but can they find any evidence as to why the men were apparently abandoned and what, if anything, could have been done to save them? In particular they involve Belgian divers, keen to also tell another side of the story. Fairly or unfairly, American survivors are very critical of the Leopoldville's crew, who they say left them to their fate. | 09/02/2009

Shipwrecks | 1 | Britain's Sunken History - Home Waters to High Seas | 58:50 | Britain's Sunken History - Home Waters to High Seas | BBC | TV doco | Sam Willis | Mary Rose & Spanish Armada | In this three-part series, maritime historian Dr Sam Willis looks at how and why the shipwreck came to loom so large. He begins with the embarrassing story of the top-heavy Mary Rose, the freak wrecking of the Spanish Armada and the terrifying real-life disasters at sea that inspired two of the greatest of all castaway tales - Shakespeare's The Tempest and Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. | 02/09/2013
Shipwrecks | 2 | Britain's Sunken History - A World Turned Upside Down | 59:13 | Britain's Sunken History - A World Turned Upside Down | BBC | TV doco | Sam Willis | Mutiny, murder and mayhem on the high seas as Sam Willis takes the story of shipwrecks into the Georgian age when Britain first began to rule the waves. But with maritime trade driving the whole enterprise, disasters at sea imperilled all this. As key colonies were established and new territories conquered, the great sailing ships became symbols of the power of the Georgian state - and the shipwreck was to be its Achilles' heel. By literally turning this world upside down, mutinous sailors, rebellious slaves and murderous wreckers threatened to undermine Britain's ambitions and jeopardise its imperial venture. | 09/12/2013
Shipwrecks | 3 | Britain's Sunken History - Civilising The Sea | 59:41 | Britain's Sunken History - Civilising The Sea | BBC | TV doco | Sam Willis | The terrible toll taken by shipwrecks was such that in the winter of 1820 some 20,000 seaman lost their lives in the North Sea alone. That's 20 jumbo jets. But in the final part of his series, maritime historian Sam Willis tells the stirring story of how the Victorians were finally driven into action, finding various ingenious solutions - from rockets that could fire rescue lines aboard stricken vessels to lifejackets, lifeboats and the Plimsoll Line, which outlawed overloading. In Africa, he traces the legend of the Birkenhead Drill - the origin of 'women and children first'. Decorum even in disaster was the new Victorian way and it was conspicuously on hand to turn history's most iconic shipwreck - Titanic - into a tragic monument to British restraint. | 16/12/2001

Swallowed by the Sea - Ancient Egypts Greatest Lost City | 59:19 | Swallowed by the Sea - Ancient Egypts Greatest Lost City | BBC | TV doco | Luke Wiles / Amy Maher | Lucy Blue | Documentary following a team of maritime archaeologists as they uncover the remarkable city of Heracleion, lost to the sea and forgotten for over two thousand years. In the fading days of the pharaohs, the city of Heracleion was the gateway to Egypt and a port beyond compare. In the 4th century BC, this was an opulent and prosperous place adorned with statues and sphinxes. It was a city of religious significance and home to the temple of Amun. In the 2nd century BC it was wiped off the face of the earth. In a mysterious subsidence, the coastline dropped by over 20ft and Heracleion was consumed by the sea. The lost city slept for centuries beneath the waters of the Mediterranean. In 2000, archaeologists made an incredible find. Using ancient texts, they discovered the city's remains six kilometres off the Egyptian coast and only 10 metres underwater. Pristinely preserved, it is an archaeological jewel - an ancient Egyptian city frozen in time. The glorious temples, statues, houses and boats of the cities lie perfectly preserved by the sea, providing a snapshot of ancient Egyptian life. But many mysteries remain. What caused this sacred city to plunge into the sea? And why did its inhabitants deliberately sink over 65 ancient warships? | 15/10/2014

Hidden somewhere inside the wreck is silver bullion said to be worth as much as £120 million. After weeks spent carefully surveying the seabed, the team locate the wreck some 300 miles south west of Galway Bay, lying 4,700 metres below the surface of the North Atlantic, a depth from which no treasure has ever been recovered before. The team soon realise that they will need tools more powerful than those they have on board the Explorer. They charter a deep-water excavation vessel, the Seabed Worker, to tackle the challenge, and Andrew devises a plan to deconstruct the steel wreck with specialised equipment. But the team soon learn that there are good reasons why no-one has ever recovered loot from this depth before. They battle unpredictable weather and equipment malfunctions, as well as the ever-present dangers and uncertainties of working nearly five kilometres beneath the sea. Andrew and his crew succeed in confirming that there is a fortune in silver hidden inside the wreck. But after 28 days, they still cannot raise the haul and are forced to suspend their quest and return to port. Will the SS Gairsoppa’s treasure remain on the seabed for ever? | 05/08/2013 |

Time Team | Sp. 11 | The wreck of the Colossus | 43:40 | The wreck of the Colossus | TV doco | HMS Colossus | HMS Victory, probably the most famous English warship of all time. Everyone knows the story of how the Victory, under the command of Admiral Lord Nelson routed the French at the battle of Trafalgar and how Nelson died a national hero. Quite rightly, this is a perfectly preserved piece of our maritime heritage, but what happened to the other ships under Nelson’s command, where are they? Well, the simple answer is, they’re all long gone. Either destroyed in battle, lost at sea, broken up or just rotted away. Well, maybe not quite all. This is a story about the underwater excavation of one of Nelson’s lost ships. It involves Nelson’s mistress, Emma Hamilton; her husband, amateur archaeologist, Sir William Hamilton; a priceless collection of antiquities; a shipwreck and the discovery and raising of one of the most important pieces of maritime art ever found in British waters. | 31/10/2002
Time Team | Sp. 15 | The House in the Loch - Loch Tay | 44:14 | The House in the Loch - Loch Tay | TV doco | 2004 | Loch Tay, Perthshire, Scotland - The Crannog in the Loch. Loch Tay, and the kind of view that draws people to Scotland. But the landscape isn’t the main attraction for archaeologists Nick Dixon and Barrie Andrian, who are much more interested in what they can see in the shallow waters around the edge of this loch. They’re carrying out the first ever underwater excavation of a crannog, an artificial island built in the Iron Age. A structure that’s now completely submerged, but originally would have looked something like this. This full-scale reconstruction was built as an experiment based on timbers discovered so far. But ideas could change as new discoveries are made. But what makes Oak Bank crannog so important is that the preservation underwater is fantastic, all sorts of clues to life in the Iron Age are being discovered here. Unique 2500 year old wooden objects that only survive underwater. Not surprisingly, digging a site as rich as this has become a kind of obsession. Nick’s been diving here most summers since 1980. This summers excavation was different, husband and wife team, Nick and Barrie decided to run a field school, the students got to learn about underwater archaeology while they got extra help excavating the site. Having to both teach and excavate, time was at a premium. This year’s challenge, it was not only to unlock new secrets of the 2500 year old crannog, but also to introduce a bunch of rookies to the realities and rewards of working underwater. In this time team special documentary, you’ll be submerged into the world of underwater archaeology, and visit an Iron Age house that hasn’t been seen since prehistoric times. Are you ready? Stand by to dive into the Iron Age. | 19/04/2004

Timewatch | 2008.1 | Viking Voyage | 89:00 | Viking Voyage | TV doco | On 1 July 2007, 65 volunteers are setting off on an extraordinary voyage. After ten years of meticulous preparation, a crew of intrepid volunteers will sail a reconstructed Viking warship, the 'Sea Stallion' from Glendalough (the Irish location where she originated), from Denmark to Dublin - a journey of over 1,000 miles through some of the most challenging waters in the world. The project is not just a thrilling adventure on the high seas, it is one of the largest experimental archaeology projects ever conducted. The team behind the boat's construction hope to gain a unique understanding of Viking technology, and the men who made these ships one of the most feared sights of the Dark Ages. This is experimental archaeology pushed to its limit - the crew will be crossing the same waters in the same type of vessel as the Vikings. They will gain an insight into the hardships, risks and realities that those intrepid warriors would have faced a millennium ago. Each member of crew has less than one square metre where they must live, sleep and eat. Privacy is impossible. The ship has no shelter from the weather, no cleaning facilities and no lavatories. They will be living virtually on top of each other for six weeks and this will test their camaraderie to the limit. It will also be a challenging test for the boat itself. No one knows whether the structure they've built will be able to withstand the rigours of the open sea. If a mistake has been made in the reconstruction, the ship could be destroyed by the forces of the waves and wind. Every crew member knows there's a risk of shipwreck in the North Sea. | 05/01/2008
